Wild World of College Golf
The staggering scoring spread across college golf
College golf might just be the most unpredictable—and uneven—sport in college athletics. From powerhouse programs where players fire 68s like they're on tour, to teams where breaking 80 is a good day, the range of competitiveness is massive.
And the most surprising part? Scores don't just vary between divisions - they swing wildly within divisions.
Let’s start at the top and look at scoring averages for teams by division.
Division I
- Men: Top team – 68 | Bottom team – 80
- Women: Top team – 69 | Bottom team – 85
That’s a 12–16 shot difference within the same division!
Division II
- Men: Top team – 71 | Bottom team – 90
- Women: Top team – 72 | Bottom team – 104
That’s more than 30 shots apart—and they’re all technically playing in the same division.
Division III
- Men: Top team – 72 | Bottom team – 98
- Women: Top team – 73 | Bottom team – 126
That’s a 53-shot spread. Let that sink in.
So what does all this mean?
It means “college golf” isn’t one consistent level—it’s a spectrum. The best players in DII or DIII could compete comfortably with mid-tier DI programs, while others are simply there to enjoy the game and represent their school.
For junior golfers (and parents) looking ahead to college golf, this is good news. The wide range of scoring levels means there’s likely a program that fits your current ability—and one that challenges you to grow.
The key is knowing where you stand and finding the right fit.
At Dreamit Golf, we live for this kind of data because it brings clarity to a confusing landscape. Whether you’re chasing a spot at Auburn or looking for a great DIII program where you can balance golf and academics, remember: the wild world of college golf has room for everyone.
